Blog Borg Collective

We're described as Citizen Journalists somewhat akin to CBC's Fifth Estate of "investigative journalism, to challenge assumptions and question conventional wisdom". Where news media fight amongst themselves for the best ratings and dollars, blogs exist as "pages" pulled together by a common cause in hopes of finding some traces of truth in amongst the word of the highly paid political script writers (spin doctors) of the government, in this case, the very much provincial BC Liberals.

“Concrete poles, they’ve been around a long time — since the ‘70s,” BC Hydro community relations manager Dag Sharman told KTW.

“We identified a potential safety issue with the concrete poles and that’s why they’re being replaced.”
Highland Powerlines is the contractor BC Hydro has hired to switch out a number of concrete poles in the Kamloops area, and project manager Rob Oleksyn said the issue has to do with the steel re-enforcement inside the concrete.

“There’s an electrolysis issue they’re having,” he said.

“The concrete is a conductor because it’s got steel inside.

“It’s causing the bolts to fail. It’s actually deteriorating the galvanized bolt inside the concrete pole.”

Oleksyn said a worst-case scenario would likely see a downed line, but Sharman said no issues have been reported and the switch back to wood is a precautionary measure.

How can the BC Liberal Party MLAs use the BC Legislature building for their group photo ops when there are 85 elected MLAs? Separate but equal!

Premier Christy Clark just doesn't understand why the public is so pissed off with her, and her MLAs, for their constant photo ops.

The Premier's use of the Legislature Building implies that the 85 elected Members are being treated equally.  It's far from the truth.

Why are gaming cheques sent to the BC Liberal Constituency Office for photo ops with the MLA.  Shouldn't the group gaming cheque be sent directly to those who submitted the application?  Are gaming cheques sent out to the Green, Independent and NDP MLAs for dispersal to their riding winners to garner the photo ops?  eg. There must be two envelops, one addressed to Peter Fassbender which contains another envelop or is there only one envelop containing multiple winner gaming cheques.

There are NO images of any Members of the Legislature who are not part of the BC Liberal Party.

That's discrimination!

"Separate but equal"  or "equal but separate."

The Legislature of British Columbia is composed of the Lieutenant Governor and 85 elected Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs). Together, members of the governing party, members of the opposition and independent members make up the B.C. Legislative Assembly.

MLAs represent the interests of their constituents (the citizens that reside in the MLA’s electoral area), by participating in political debates during sessions of the Legislative Assembly.

MLAs not only represent their electoral area and their constituents, they can be a member of cabinet committees, and be appointed to a ministerial role of one of the government's ministries.

B.C. Community gaming grant money: Why must the winners SMILE for the BC Liberal Party Photo Ops?

Is it ONLY the BC Liberal Members of the Legislature awarding gaming money to their Constituents?   Does BC Liberal Party Finance Minister Mike de Jong set the limits on which money goes where, and how much?   BC Liberal Riding vs Green, Independent, NDP ridings?

Last week MLA Peter Fassbender admitted a "screw-up" of mixing his Constituency photo op with his Campaign office photo op when it came to handing out gaming grant money because  .... "it is normal procedure for an MLA announcing local money"
Fassbender said he did one set of photos with part of the group in his MLA constituency office that Saturday morning — which is normal procedure for an MLA announcing local money — and then another group asked him for a photo later and he was already at his campaign office.
Is it normal procedure only for the BC Liberal MLAs to stand toe to toe with their Constituents?

Fund Raising: Indirectly, or Directly: Is There a Darkside to MLA / Minister Fassbender et al?

Update:  Integrity BC : Dermod Travis:
..... A provincial candidate can spend $70,000 during an election, without limit before it.

However, the local Rotary Club can’t spend more than $3,000, even if it’s on an ad discussing the benefits of school lunch programs.

So what’s a citizen to do if that $3,000 third-party spending limit stands in the way of getting their message out?   Find a chum, form a political party, run a candidate and mystically that limit is now $5.5 million.  ......

The BC Liberals have been much in the news as of late due to their million dollar fundraisers where bags of money are handed over to be deposited into their war chest coffers Directly, and Indirectly through third party Lobbyists who's role is to insulate the secret benefactors from Elections BC documentation of who is doing what, and how much.

Mark Jiles
Both registered lobbyists acknowledged to The Globe they were actually buying Liberal fundraising tickets on behalf of their clients and companies, then getting reimbursed, which is against the law.

“That’s an indirect political contribution and that’s not okay,” said Ms. Western. “You can only make a political contribution with your own money – and you can’t be reimbursed.”  - Globe and Mail

For the past four years Christy and Company/Government have expended a ton of time, and taxpayer money, supporting communities, and through various groups.

BC Government Flickr

 Medal of Good Citizenship

Every time the Premier, and/or her Ministers show up for a photo op, there they are handing out  government cheques.

Can you just imagine having the Premier of Province, and Ministers arriving at your community by helicopter handing over a cheque for $150,000?     Buying votes?

Peter Fassbender admits his photo op kerfuffle was his 'screw-up'.  The bucks stops where?

Are there two sets of photos taken?  One for the BC Government Flickr site, one for the Party campaign?

If a group of 100 were looking for thousands of dollars of funding Directly from the BC Liberal Government, what better way would that be achieved than a group of 100 donating $10 - $50 to the BC Liberal Party coffers individually $1,000 - $5,000, in exchange for 15 times more in grant money?  BC Liberal Party Wins;  the Group Wins

Doling out money so close to the Provincial Election smacks of a 2017 Win-Win scenario, much like the BC Liberals 2013 Quick Win election ploy.

Fassbender quote:
“They came and I took a picture, and I said whatever you do don’t have any B.C. Liberal stuff in the background because it’s not a campaign thing,” said Fassbender. “I should never have allowed them to take a picture there.”

'Screws-up' definition:
To fail at something, to do something wrong/incorrectly (sometimes repeatedly). Someone that screws up a lot is called a "screw-up"

Vancouver Sun - Rob Shaw
Fassbender apologized Wednesday in an interview.
...... “I own this, I should never have done it,” he said. “It’s a mistake and it will never happen again, I can assure you. I know the difference. It was just one of those mornings where there was a screw-up with everyone coming to my constituency office.”

Fassbender said he did one set of photos with part of the group in his MLA constituency office that Saturday morning — which is normal procedure for an MLA announcing local money — and then another group asked him for a photo later and he was already at his campaign office.

“They came and I took a picture, and I said whatever you do don’t have any B.C. Liberal stuff in the background because it’s not a campaign thing,” said Fassbender. “I should never have allowed them to take a picture there.”  ......

How many other photo ops have taken place specifically to reward the BC Liberal Party?

The Fassbender's ffices are mere blocks apart ......

EXCLUSIVE: April 1: Grouse Mountain Resort awarded 100 year contract to operate Translink's Gondola fleet across Burrard Inlet!!

April 1st?

Three times Monday morning we had to confirm that our home delivered Vancouver Sun newspaper was dated correctly:
Opinion
Gondola best option to link North Shore

Richard Littlemore

North Vancouver District City Mayor Darrell Mussatto has started an interesting conversation about improving transportation to the North Shore, suggesting the region should consider running rapid transit through a tunnel under Burrard Inlet. But maybe there’s a better option.

A transit gondola would be a fraction of the cost, easier to build, cheaper to operate and have a lower environmental footprint, forever.

I anticipate that this idea may inspire a certain amount of eye-rolling, but there’s evidence that a gondola could be a practical and affordable option. Let’s consider both obstacles and possibilities.

The first obstacle is distance: the SeaBus (which connects the two most obvious passenger transportation centres in Vancouver and North Vancouver) plies a 3.24-kilometre crossing. The Sun recently quoted University of B.C. engineering professor Erik Eberhardt, estimating that the cost of tunnelling “a few kilometres” under the harbour would be about $1 billion. And that, presumably, is just for the tunnel; never mind the expensive rail links, passenger infrastructure and rolling stock.

But the Peak2Peak gondola at Whistler, which runs 4.4 kilometres with a single span of 3.06 kilometres, cost just $51 million in 2008. It can be done. ...... SNIP

Sea Bus Gondola
If Translink is looking for a money maker overseer, then Grouse Mountain Resort has the credentials.  One only needs to look at their Sky 'high' Ride return trip pricing which does not include paid parking fees.

A Gondola ride from the ICBC rooftop at Lonsdale Quay to a matching one at Vancouver's Waterfront station with two supporting towers in between would cost $100 Million???

The City of North Vancouver's 'Chunnel' to Vancouver is subject to earthquake activity, and immediate flooding of the tunnel would occur.

With Translink going the airborne Gondola route, the manufacturer claims that they come with airbag flotation devices which are deployed upon impact with water.

Discussion Paper: Disclosure of Political Contributions – May 2016

    What is real time disclosure?

While the term 'real time disclosure' is sometimes used to describe the work of more frequent reporting of political contributions, it is an inaccurate and inconsistently defined phrase.
For example, financial institutions often provide free stock quotes to the general public with a delay of up to twenty minutes from when the price was last updated. The same institutions also offer paid access to feeds showing live stock quotes without any significant lag time. Although both types of quotes often are referred to as 'real time quotes', the term 'real time quote' is accurate only for this second feed because the price shown reflects the actual price at that moment in time.

In contrast, there is no jurisdiction in Canada or the U.S.. (and perhaps globally) that requires the public disclosure of political contributions immediately after they are made. The jurisdictions with the timeliest of reporting requirements still provide 24 hours for the recipient of the contribution to report it to the election management body for public disclosure. In other jurisdictions, recipients may have anywhere from 48 hours to ten business days to report the contribution. Once reported, some jurisdictions then provide the election management body with up to ten additional business days to make the disclosure public.

Therefore this discussion paper uses the phrase 'more frequent reporting of political contributions' to refer to the disclosure of political contributions on any basis more frequent than the Election Act currently provides.

The term 'disclosure notification' is used in this discussion paper to refer to the mechanism by which political contribution information will be provided to Elections BC for public disclosure to distinguish them from reports currently required to be
    filed under the Election Act.

    Dr. Keith Archer
    Chief Electoral Officer
    Elections BC

I am writing further to my telephone message to you on March 31. 2016. to continue my advice to you regarding the request by the Premier that the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer undertake a process of evaluating the requirements for more frequent contribution reporting (Real Time Disclosure's). As discussed. I anticipate that this would involve disclosure requirements on a quarterly, or possibly a monthly basis, rather than the current requirement for annual disclosure..
While the first priority for the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer must he the completion of the electoral boundary maps and supporting material. I would ask that your office begin to give consideration to the following questions regarding Real Time Disclosure:
    • How much time would be required to develop a proposal and to implement Real Time Disclosure:
    • What cost would he involved;
    • What legislative changes would be required: and
    • Are there precedents in other jurisdictions that could be considered.
Thank you for your consideration of this request. Yours very truly.
