THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF LETTERS (honoris causa)
STATEMENT BY PRESIDENT N.A.M. MacKENZIE AT CONGREGATION, MAY 10th, 1945.
EMILY CARR
We had hoped today to acknowledge the honour which has been brought
to our province by one of her most notable children; for the Senate had
proposed to confer the degree of Doctor of Letters on Emily Carr, whose
pictures and books have made British Columbia famous in the world of
art. It is good to know that the Senate’s invitation gave pleasure to
Miss Carr and that she would have accepted it. We mourn her untimely
death; but we are proud to enroll her name on the records of the
University as of one belonging to its fellowship.
