Dear All

-- Greetings, wonderful show at the PNE; managed to see a few friends from the past...here is a circle divider from Tim McCreight's Book-Complete Metalsmith-use it to divide up circles into equal parts. love the presentations of our club at the show as well as our Presidents display of jewellery/carving. he has gathered some great talent behind him. I see a group of seven in the far future.

     Metalworks  your makerbot sample request

dear all,
here's a suggestion for a program for the HCR one of these days .. there also is a place (3DSmith) west on Seymour at 518 West Pender on the north side of the street a few stores down that has a range of 3-D printers and he has displays of what it can do ..particularly to jewelry he has a range of pendants/rings n' others that he had cast in silver derived from the 3-d printer...i will get some cards from him to get to  our next meeting..see attached letter. enjoy the attached video file.

We've released new products since then, and we have a wide network of resellers in Canada now, and I'd be happy to set up a demo or talk about time and money-saving uses for Creative jewelers Guild.

For example, you might like this new video we produced with Lockheed Martin about their satellite telescopic lenses: http://mbot.co/2m88i87  MakerBot One MetroTech Center, 21st Floor Brooklyn, NY 11201 W

Enjoy viewing the attached websites...instructional DVD shorts on techniques/tool reviews/tips n' tricks..titanium strip pieces for clamping down your soldering projects (download pics of some clamp configurations)

--Dear all,

here are 2 websites that are both free and paid for service subscription .. some of the free viewing is listed on Andrew Berry's website and on youtube. They are: www.atthebench.com -over 1000 instructionals available and he is producing 3 DVD shorts each week with techniques/tool reviews/top tricks n tips. he is a definite well versed instructor and covers what we all would like to achieve in jewelry and at a fractional cost of doing a jewelry course in the lower mainland. it might be the way to expand one's experttise in the long run the next website introduces titanium strips for usage as clamps for soldering. you can view the assorted ways they are shaped and view Andrews Berry's use of them on youtube. www.andrewberry.co.uk/product/knew-concepts-titanium-soldering-strips/# you can download pics of the various shaping of his minicamps on this web page

My name is Alec Steele, I am a blacksmith! You probably know me through YouTube and know that I film and edit a daily YouTube vlog, forging projects that push the boundaries of my knowledge and entertain you, the viewer!

Metalworks-from HCR - Becker youtube on Kinetic jewelry

Dear All

Jeweler Kinetic Rings - Studio Michael Berger

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69kVOM7uQ5Y

... loves transforming graceful hands into eye-catching stages. Appropriately, his hand-made collections feature kinetic jewellery pieces that move and spin on the wearer's hand. At first glance, his stainless steel or gold ring sculptures seem to be attractively heavy, clearly shaped pieces. It is when you put them on and start moving your hands that their full magic is revealed: the top elements, which nestle closely together, start to move and rotate.

-this is a beauty of engineering/structure and art...all rolled into one .. savour this !

Metalworks from HCR Studio Craft as Career-a Guide to Achieving excellence in Art-Making

Dear all,

discovered a nice synoptic book on art as career containing a 45 year career by author Paul J. Stankard's advice and attendant with this is a synopsis of 48 Artist A-Z showing their works and adding a pithy piece of advice to pursuing one's dreams (as well as their websites)...if you know someone who is younger/eager and artistic this might be a book that could be a good mentoring book to use.

Studio Craft as a Career Guide to Achieving Excellence in Art-making

an example of advice ?

p 191-Sondra Sherman:  Creative:

Growth-protect time to explore and follow curiosity
be fearless (or pretend to be)
be obsessive
cultivate and embrace your idiosyncrasy
be brave, be brave, be brave

for Practical concerns:

recognize the difference between creating and producing; knowing both are necessary in professional practice and not always in desired proportions explore the varied types of practice in your field-try them-directly or as an employee/assistant knowing yourself is key to understanding what motivates your creative growth and what form of practice will be fulfilling and viable.

Motivation must be internal and supported by your personal values or it will be fragile.

now add another 47 words of advice from other artist in glass/wood/metal etc and quotes: i.e.

page 150 - Ferne Jacobs Carl Jung said:   Pick the hardest thing to do, because if you do that, all your energy comes together to focus on it. If it is too easy, not enough energy gets engaged. I always want to be in a mystery, and learn something new, so I take the risk!

Cheers,

Mike

Metalwork-HRC-jewelery show at Vancouver Community College on May 18, 2017

 Dear all,

consider visiting VCC for their annual jewelry show to be held on May 18, 2017 between 6-9 PM it will be held at their downtown campus on Hastings street.

check out what's the latest craze in jewelry  and what the school is offering in terms of evening courses. it has come to my attention that at John Oliver high school they are offering in their machine shop at the back of  the high school a jewelry course  and that these courses are convertible to credits at VCC's downtown jewelry school. So if you are young or old and want to consider training in this direction that might be a way to go and re-invigorate yourself.

            cheers

Hastings Centre Rockhounds Annual Rock and Gem Show
You are invited to attend the Hastings Centre Rockhounds Annual Rock, Gem, and Jewellery Show on Saturday June 25 and Sunday June 26.

The show is held in the gym at the Hastings Community Centre, 3096 East Hastings Street, Vancouver. Admission is by donation.  Hours are 10 am to 5 pm each day.

We are very proud to show the public our unique and beautiful treasures our members have crafted with their own hands.  Each piece represents skill and patience along with a bit of creativity. We will also have various demonstrations in cabochon making and Jewellery making. Stop by and see how the craft is done!

Along with our members' tables, we have invited others in the rock and lapidary community to sell their products that are of interest to our hobby. You will find rough rock, mineral specimens, slabs, tools, finished products like tumbled stones and jewellery, as well as books and findings.

The Silent Auction, Grab Bags, and Spin and Win ensure that everyone can go home with something special.

We offer fun for the entire family and children can partake in a unique experience and take home their own hand made crafts. This year we will be continuing the highly popular soapstone carving and tumbled stone picture frame making. See our brochure for details on these activities: children's activities brochures.

Our concession table has lots fresh and tasty goodies available to indulge the senses and satisfy your taste buds.   Playing with rocks always work up an appetite.   Our annual show is also membership drive which connects us with people who may become active new members in our club. We welcome your interest and questions.

Please make plans to attend our show and bring all your friends and family since everyone is welcome. We look forward to spending time with you.

Metalworks-if you have Cold Feet and Wonderment something is going Right

--Dear all,

... have just recently become a fan of Facebook (a few months-seriously) ... became friends with Michael David Sturlin ..it reminds me that sometimes we want to make things 'as quick as possible. and in the end ..methinks, are we really so enthralled at what we accomplished that we would bolt out of our bed and run down onto a cold frigid concrete floor in the workshop to view at our creation and stare in wonderment ...when i was younger person taking several jewelery courses with Olga H. (at her home) the techniques she taught me from the old schools in Europe and the fierce austere manner of her teaching created for me by her guidance jewelry that gave me such moment-truths (and many times) ..today I could never reproduce the patience and discipline she wanted to impart onto me to make these pieces ..so going back to Michael David Sturlin see his timeline of Facebook and as attached a picture of 6 saw pierced/carved bezels in .999 silver ...using file and saw and imagination / patience and discipline to do it right. He has given the right to copy these patterns from his postings on Facebook (he teaches his students these tasks).. they are a joy to look at ...a way to do this same project but at a relatively macroscopic way is to forge half round wire from round stock using a swage block (could solder up into bangle or leave it flat) and just using your needle files play with patterns (maybe even saw pierce edges/rounds/triangles et.al.)

..it'll take a while to finish the project but maybe you'll experience the cold feet in the early morning and gap in wonderment at your work like a child who has first walked onto a horizon with no end in sight...

Michael Sturlin Studio

PS ...discovered if you want to check out /follow jewelers works specifically...type their, name.com and you'll more than likely get to their works directly...discovered this looking through Metalsmith mag.

      Metalworks-check out: Harufumi Shiraki

--Dear all,

promised some people i would put a link to the fine jewelry works on youtube of saw piercing .... youtube:  Harufumi Shiraki ....one can check out his use of the templates/stylus, positioning of templates and his Bench pin is composed of ebony and/or iron wood which is hard/slippery (which allows more subtle mobilty of his project to the saw position) and his kerf on the bench pin is thin which allows a better singing of the blade rather than the chatter if both sides of the fine sawing is not supported properly...

I think the attached are the very basic for Enamelling, plus a few colours on enamel powder.
You don't need a tripod if you don't have one, the stainless steel Spatula is a new design that makes shifting and picking up the piece a charm. The Torch is easy to use and the butane canisters can be bought at the Chinese grocery for a pack of 4 for $5.00.

Metalworks-next meeting the Day after BC Day.. www.schifferbooks.com

--Dear all,

just because there's a holiday doesn't mean i'm going away..the next day after BC Day.. i will be at the same place same time (spst)  09:00 AM-2:30 PM...i will be re-showing my accessory drill bit block/some sinusoidal stakes...and whatever suits me to make things interesting..because of the US dollar reversal value I need to conserve my habit of ordering goods from the USA ...but finally i'm going to get myself the orca / beluga / EZ torch

Otto Frei torch equipment

...maybe i can start some soldering finally..most of my torches failed don't know whether it was due to dirty gases or faulty torch head design..frustrating to say the least..so join me if you can..

picked up two more books from the Library...modern jewelry (1930-1960-egads-really ??) and Modern Blacksmithing (some of the designs are a means to an end-wrought iron fences can provide ideas for your jewelry-check it out) will be bringing these books to the Hard Rock Cafe the day after BC Day holiday...by the way these books are from Schiffer Books as mentioned from one of my earlier emails www.schifferbooks.com

Dear all,

not sure you got this information..for the next year i am going to patiently acquire equipment from Fretz/NCBlack and otto frei to make this subject metal forming /shell forming and speculum shaping do-able...the forming blocks that Andrea Kennington makes seem like a nice purchase along with her Bad Betty/Cindys hammers...apparently she likes to name her hammers after people in her company ...unlike Fretz hammers which are named from a textbook on mechanical engineering and more cryptic and seemingly impersonal although when you have them in your hands ..awesome/delicate and poetic...a poem in motion so to speak

 Metalworks-Diatoms

Dear all,

a question was brought up in the Creative Jewellers Guild about where to get inspiration for one's jewelery's works.. suggestions given were from Nature ...from Architectural design motifs.. from alphabets (African motifs) and Diatoms... attached is a scanned micrograph of Diatoms which rival every notion of shapes unimaginable...line drawings of this group puts to rest ovals/rounds and squares found in the template sheets in Lapidary shops ...other suggestions ..???..... Mandalas . Zentangles . Doodles ... Dover Publications (1000's of motifs)... but in our everyday lives we need observe design. its everywhere if only we could take the time..at the Van Dusen Gardens unravelling christmas lights for the Christmas Lights Festival..while in the gardens saw an Umbrella Magnolia which had leaves the size of a breastplate. I'll be there for the next few months observing their demise and an opportunity to silently; be silent. will send picture of it to all tomorrow

cheers
