Had to get out my scale ruler this afternoon, or rather my tape measure, to scale off the maps distances compared to all others, in regard to the "Proposed Northern Gateway tanker routes". Some of us have driven the circuitous route from Vancouver to Port Hardy to Prince Rupert to Prince George and south via the Fraser Canyon to reach..... Vancouver. Most, including our Non-Premier, fly, her, often, us, not so often, maybe once or twice in our lifetimes.
The problem here is that the public is being hit with these maps, showing where the Proposed Northen Gateway pipeline is beginning and where its supposed to be ending.
These maps remind me of an earlier Post here at the BBC where Whistler can be shown to be in two different places, at once, and to the consumers, who thinks they are going to almost the top of Vancouver Island, but inland...to only discover they are closer to the foot of Victoria, but inland.......something needs to be clarified here... like just where is Whistler, or Kitimat, or Vancouver, or Bruderheim or Edmonton.
In the Vancouver Sun this morning, Page B3, the Canadian Press has supplied us with two maps, the first one, at the top, is titled "Proposed Northern Gateway tanker routes", and the second one, at the bottom, is called "Proposed Northern Gateway Pipeline". They both have a scale shown but its on the ORIGINAL map, set at "200 KM". The first one is of British Columbia alone, the second includes both BC and Alberta.... and they have both been cropped to the same width on the page on the newspaper page...... go figure. In height, the first one shows only the top half of Vancouver Island, and the second one shows ALL of Vancouver Island plus an overly large portion of the United States of America.
Kitimat? Kitimat in the first one is almost level with the top of Haida Gwaii, second map shows Kitimat almost half way down the length of Haida Gwaii.
As to the route of the pipeline, its not near any highway that we've ever driven. So how does one relate to the pipeline?
Oh, and it was the hardcopy of the article in the Vancouver Sun called "Ottawa sets deadline for pipeline assessment" that I was reading...... the on-line version doesn't show any of the maps.....
And don't forget the EXISTING tanker traffic routes, eh..... without any of the proposed oil tankers leaving the Port of Vancouver.... being depicted in this colourful......drawing.
